IVF (IN VITRO FERTILIZATION) is a complex process but one of the commonest forms of assisted reproductive technology (ART) for couples who are experiencing fertility problems. For many Westerners it is an expensive process, but considerably less expensive in Thailand.
The facilities and techniques in Thailand are on a par with Western standards, and getting away from it all and relaxing on holiday can certainly have a positive effect.
The success of the treatment depends on a number of elements which includes lifestyle, age and the cause of infertility. Problems which may be treated by IVF include:
- Unexplained infertility- Fallopian tubes that are damaged or blocked- Endometriosis- Ovulation problems- Antibodies that harm eggs or sperm- Male infertility, such as sperm motility or low sperm count
While cost is one of the major considerations for couples looking at IVF in Bangkok – savings of up to 60% are not unusual – Bangkok also has a well-established infrastructure with state-of-the-art clinics, JCI-accredited hospitals and laboratories that are equipped with the latest technologies to deliver all manner of fertility treatments.
The expertise available in Bangkok, as many people have discovered, is just as good as it is at home, and moreover the facilities often look (and are) better, obviously giving patients confidence. In terms of fertility treatments this is especially desirable, as it is believed that conception is more likely to happen when a patient feels relaxed.
Many patients find their IVF experience in Bangkok to be extremely positive, the attentiveness of the staff, and the high-standards of customer care being something that is far superior to their treatments at home. For example, rather than have to do injections yourself – a stressful experience – the nurses at the Bangkok clinics undertake to do this every day. Similarly, clinics are open at the weekend, so if the optimum day for egg transfer is on a Sunday, then that is the day then it will happen, rather than on a Friday, or Monday, which patients find is the norm at home.
We always advise patients to do a little homework and not just choose a clinic simply because it’s the cheapest. Booking with Medical Departures gives you pre-checked doctors and clinics whose qualifications and professional memberships have already been verified by us, and the premises visited personally. With real patient reviews published on our website, our patients get an accurate overview of clinics before they book.
There are a number of steps involved in the IVF procedure, with patients typically spending 7-10 days in Bangkok.
The steps include:
1: Egg Production
Egg production is simulated with medication and blood tests and ultrasound are used to examined the ovaries to see if this has occurred.
2: Egg Collection
If eggs have been produced, a minor surgical procedure using a hollow needle to collect the eggs is performed.
3: Sperm collection
A sperm sample is collected from the male
The sperm and eggs are combined in laboratory conditions to encourage fertilization and monitored closely for signs of cell division, which confirms that fertilization has occurred.
5: Transfer of embryos
3-5 days after fertilization the viable eggs are transferred to the uterus in a painless procedure. If successful, implantation occurs between 6 and 10 days after egg retrieval.
There are modified versions of IVF, including ZIFT (Zygote Intrafallopian transfer) and GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer).
In Bangkok, IVF costs around AUD $3,500 per cycle, making substantial savings compared to around $7,800 in Australia.
