The Ultimate Guide to Body Lift

Body lift surgery is a major undertaking, but if you have rolls of loose skin (particularly after weight loss surgery) then it is the next step to reclaiming back your body.

It is extensive, requiring weeks of downtime to recover afterwards. However, not having to go to work or deal with the everyday things you would have to at home means it could be the ideal cosmetic surgery procedure to have abroad, providing you choose a reputable surgeon and clinic.

What is a body lift?

A body lift is surgery performed to improve the appearance of the skin’s surface by removing excess fat and loose skin, which also helps to minimize cellulite and ‘orange peel’ skin on certain parts of the body.

Ageing, weight loss, pregnancy, sun damage and even genetics may all play a part in reducing skin elasticity which leads to dimpled and sagging skin, which for some people, no amount of exercise will shift.

Am I suitable for a body lift?

If you are generally in good health, a body lift may be suitable if you have problems in these areas:

  • Abdomen (including the sides and into the lower back)
  • Buttocks
  • Groin
  • Thigh

A body lift is not suitable for removing fat, where liposuction may be the better option. Some people have a combination of both.

How long does the body lift procedure take?

The body lift is actually a combination of procedures, tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient, and so no two procedures are the same. Normally, the procedure includes a tummy tuck, thigh lift and butt lift, but you may have particular problem areas that you want your surgeon to target, such as your abdomen, or your thighs. On average, the surgery usually takes between 4 and 5 hours.

What is involved in the body lift procedure?

You will have a detailed consultation with your surgeon to discuss how your expectations can be met, and what areas, in particular, you find problematical. Your surgeon will advise on how these problems can be tackled and the areas to be addressed during the surgery.

On the day of the surgery you will have a general anesthetic, and long incisions will made to remove the underlying excess fat and loose skin. Usually, the incisions will be made in areas that can be hidden under clothes, such as bikini bottoms. Once the excess fat and skin is removed you will be stitched up, and may have temporary drainage tubes inserted into the scars to help remove fluid.

What is the recovery time for a body lift procedure?

A body lift is major surgery, and you will feel stiff and tender for a number of weeks afterwards. The drainage tubes may be in situ for a number of weeks and these will be uncomfortable when moving around.

It is likely you will need around a month off work, engaging only in light activities for at least 6 weeks. Strenuous activities should not be undertaken for several months.

What about the quality of clinics abroad for a body lift?

Choose a reliable clinic and surgeon and you should find that the quality is excellent. There are many good clinics overseas now, catering for international patients, so it is always wise to do a little homework.

At Medical Departures part of our remit is to ensure our patients go to quality-checked clinics with qualified and regulated medical staff, with the appropriate clinical expertise. But this is just part of the process – hygiene and safety, equipment, materials – these are all important too, which is why we undertake clinic visits so we can see for ourselves whether it would be the kind of place we would entrust ourselves too. Finally, real patient reviews, taken in conjunction with the other steps we take to verify reliability, provide an additional source of information.

What is the cost of body lift surgery abroad?

Prices vary, depending on which country you go to, but you can usually make savings between 50-70% in most cases, and sometimes even more.

Body lifts in Mexico cost around $8,000.

Body Lifts in Thailand cost on average $4,300
