The Ultimate Guide to Facial Liposuction

Get rid of unsightly, stubborn fat pockets on your face with a facial liposuction procedure.

Facial liposuction is often referred to as facial liposculpture or fat transfer and is carried out by a facial plastic surgeon. By carefully removing the unsightly fat deposits which have accumulated in isolated areas of the face and neck; facial liposuction can have a dramatic effect on making your face look more defined, chiseled and younger.

The cause of these fat pockets may be hereditary because people who aren’t overweight may have the same plump face as their parents. Another reason is perhaps the natural aging process and the fat cells have simply accumulated over time. Whatever the reason, it’s generally accepted that some of the most difficult places to lose fat is in the neck, face and jowl regions.

Am I suitable for facial liposuction?

Generally speaking, the older the skin, the less elasticity so and the longer it will take to contract and spring back into place. If your skin is relatively healthy, there will be minimal swelling and the results - most often a dramatic improvement - will be noticeable much sooner.

It’s imperative to keep hopes and expectations realistic prior to this procedure: a 70-year-old grandma is never going to look like a 23-year-old supermodel, no matter what happens. It’s also incredibly important to keep a positive mental attitude and to be in a good emotional state before any of these procedures are considered or carried out.

What is the procedure for facial liposuction?

The procedure itself is usually performed under a local anesthetic with the specific area being numbed. Depending on your preference, relaxing pre-operative medication may also be administered to relieve tension, keep you calm, free of pain and comfortable. Although each patient is unique and individual, the entire procedure usually takes around 30 minutes.

Although it is a virtually pain-free operation, there will be variable amounts of postoperative swelling and inevitable bruising. The amount and how long it lasts will depend entirely on the health and elasticity of your skin. It’s not until the swelling has gone down that you will truly be able to see the results of your procedure.

General medical advice following your facial liposuction is:

  • Keep the head wrap on until the day after surgery
  • For the first two days, ice the neck area every hour to help the swelling go down.
  • Avoid exercise, bending over or heavy lifting for at least two weeks.
  • Use a mild soap to keep the incisions clean and apply antibiotic ointment twice a day.Keep your head elevated when you sleep, propping yourself up with bolsters and pillows
  • Sutures will usually be removed a week after the procedure

What is the recovery time following a facial liposuction procedure?

Swelling and bruising are to be expected in the days following your procedure but these will subside gradually over the coming weeks. After a week or so your face will feel less tight and you should be able to get out and about without feeling or looking too scary!

As a general rule of thumb, your face will have reached its best six months after surgery when any irregularities have smoothed out and softened. Avoid vigorous activities for 6 weeks.
