How Long Does In Vitro Fertilization Take and What Is the Recovery Like?

In vitro fertilization is a multi-step process, as summarized below:

  1. The first step involves the female being injected with hormones. This process makes it possible for you to produce multiple eggs rather than just one egg per month.

  2. Next, you will be tested to ensure you are ready for the eggs to be retrieved.
Prior to the eggs being retrieved, you will be injected with a medication to help the developing eggs ripen. Timing is critical in this part of the procedure, as it is necessary for the eggs to be retrieved before they are released from the follicles within the ovaries. Your physician will perform blood work or an ultrasound device to make certain the eggs are at precisely the right stage prior to retrieval.

  3. The day before the retrieval, your partner will need to donate sperm.

  4. During the retrieval process, you may be given pain medication or be mildly sedated to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Your doctor will use ultrasound during the retrieval to locate the follicles and remove the eggs using a hollow needle. This part of the procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour. After the eggs are retrieved, they will be mixed with your partner's sperm in the laboratory. The fertilized eggs will be kept at the clinic for close observation and to ensure optimal development. This could take up to five days for the developing embryos to reach what is known as the blastocyst stage.

  5. You will return to the clinic when the embryos are ready so they can be transferred to your uterus. This procedure is usually fairly fast and easy. Your doctor will insert a catheter through the vagina and cervix to deposit the embryos in your uterus. The number of embryos to be transferred will depend on a variety of factors, but it is important to be aware that IVF can result in multiple pregnancies.

Most people are able to return home within a couple of days following the procedure, provided there are no complications. You will need to avoid any type of strenuous activity while waiting to take a pregnancy test to confirm whether the procedure was successful. You may be advised to see your regular doctor within one to two weeks following the procedure to confirm pregnancy.
