Knee Replacement in Johor Bahru

The Ultimate Guide to Knee Replacement in Johor Bahru

Looking to save money on Knee replacement surgery? In Johor Bahru, Malaysia you can save thousands on the cost of your surgery, and enjoy a holiday in this gorgeous country at the same time.

Being unable to get around due to stiffness, pain and discomfort is no joke. A knee replacement will give you a renewed zest for life, enabling you to do so many things you haven’t been able to do for a while.

Why have a Knee Replacement in Johor Bahru?

This far-flung destination is at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula, overlooking the Strait of Johor – and Singapore, which is a mere taxi ride away. The location is very popular with Singapore residents, who travel here often, primarily for the lower prices.

The city is one of the fastest-developing in the country and has many attractions for urbanites – from fabulous hotels, restaurants, bars and nightlife to recreational facilities, including the recreational waterfront at Danga Bay, an urban jungle, golf courses and a zoo.

It’s a good destination to use as a base for visiting a little farther afield too, and there’s lovely countryside around, which may be particularly appealing if you are a lover of wildlife as Malaysia is one of only 17 megadiverse countries in the world and is home to many unique species.

So what of Johor Bahru’s healthcare facilities – do they match up? Yes, they do. Malaysia has excellent hospitals and those that cater to medical tourists are particularly good, and are more than a match to what you’ll find at home. They tend to be contemporary, new and equipped with the latest technologies. Medical staff are well-trained and because Malaysia was once a British colony, a good deal of Malaysia’s medical staff do undertake at least part of their training in the UK, and may well be accredited with the Royal College of Surgeons of England or Edinburgh, in Scotland.

One of the main reasons you may be tempted by Johor Bahru for your knee replacement is, of course, the price – and you will save thousands by making the trip here for what is a reasonably routine operation.

What is the procedure for knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacements are either partial knee replacements (PKR) or total (TKR). The one most suitable for you will depend on the extent of disease or damage to your knee joint. The TKR replaces both sides of the joint, but only one side is replaced in the PKR.

The surgery lasts for up to 3 hours and is usually carried out with either a spinal epidural, so that you are awake but will feel nothing below the waist, or a general anaesthetic. Before your surgery your surgeon will have already taken the measurements for the artificial joint which will simply replace the worn bone ends.

What is the recovery time for knee replacement surgery?

Expect swelling, bruising and some discomfort after surgery and a hospital stay of 3-5 days. You’ll be encouraged to get up and about as soon as you can as this reduces swelling, and you will be given walking aides, like a frame or walking sticks. A physiotherapist will advise you on exercises to strengthen your knee and improve mobility.

Improvement may seem slow but if you keep up with your exercises things will gradually improve and you should be able to drive again 4-6 weeks later, or when you feel you can control the car well. It could take up to 2 years before you will have the full benefit of your knee replacement.
