What happens during Gastric Bypass?

Gastric Bypass is usually done as a laparoscopic procedure, through small abdominal incisions. The working portion of the stomach is made smaller and attached further down the small intestine.

Techniques

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), considered the “Gold Standard” of bariatric surgery. RYGB uses a staple to separate a small portion of the stomach into a small pouch, and excluding the rest of the stomach from food digesting functions. The new small stomach pouch is attached to the small intestine, a little further down than where the stomach and small intestine usually attach.

One Anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB, Mini-gastric bypass) separates a tube like portion of the stomach, and connects it to the intestine. The OAGB technique significantly reduces the size of the stomach that processes food, and attaches about 200 centimeters further down the small intestine, which also reduces absorption of fats and nutrients.

How long will the procedure take to do?

A Gastric Bypass surgery can take about 90 minutes to complete.

What does the recovery process look like?

You’ll spend at least a couple days in the hospital, and you can drive and return to work in about two weeks, once you stop taking pain medicine. Talk with your doctor about any side effects, and dietary restrictions.

Take it easy once you are back at home, but you should be OK without extra help. You may be asked to not lift more than 20 pounds / 4.5kg for the first month and a half. It is good to move around, and do your regular daily activities, and rest when you need.

You’ll have to follow a very specialized diet, and have regular follow-ups with your doctor.
