What happens during IVF?

IVF is an involved process of five steps:

Super Ovulation uses fertility drugs to boost egg production. You’ll probably have transvaginal ultrasounds to check your ovaries and have some blood tests to check your hormone levels.
Follicular Aspiration is a minor outpatient surgery to remove eggs from your ovaries. The doctor will use ultrasound to guide a thin needle to remove the eggs and fluid from one follicle at a time.
Insemination is when the man’s sperm is introduced to the egg, and within a few hours, fertilization occurs when the sperm enters the egg cell.
Embryo culture takes about five days.
The Embryo is transferred into the womb

Techniques

The IVF process depends on your individual needs.
A pelvic laparoscopy may be done if Follicular Aspiration is not possible.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) injects the sperm directly into the egg if chances of fertilization are low.
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is pre-testing of the egg and sperm to detect hereditary disorders, and is done to prevent passing that genetic disorder to the child.
More than one embryo may be transferred into the womb, at the same time.

Your doctor will help you decide on any needed procedures.

What does the recovery process look like?

After the embryo transfer, you will be asked to rest for the remainder of the day, and may experience some cramping. You can return to your normal activities the next day. You will have to take daily hormone pills or shots of progesterone for about two to two and a half months after IVF.

In about two weeks, you will return to the clinic for a pregnancy test.
