Been thinking about boosting your cup size but put off by the high costs at home? You're not alone. However, heading abroad in search of more affordable treatment is no longer considered such a drastic option, particularly if you're swapping the US for Mexico, which is now home to hundreds of reputable clinics and hospitals that now welcome millions of medical and dental tourists each year.

Discover how to find an experienced surgeon for your breast enlargement in Mexico City with Medical Departures.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty and sometimes referred to informally as a "boob job," is a surgical procedure that increases the size of the breasts.

This is achieved by placing implants either under the breast tissue or chest muscles. For many women, breast augmentation is a way for them to improve self-image and self-confidence; for others, it may be part of breast reconstruction after a mastectomy because of breast cancer.

Why Consider a Breast Augmentation Surgery in Mexico City?

Mexico has become one of the top global destinations for medical tourism because of the low costs of medical procedures, qualified doctors and world-class facilities. For people living in the US and Canada, Mexico is an excellent option for those elective procedures done that are not usually covered by medical insurance.

One of the main advantages for people traveling from the US and Canada to have breast augmentation surgery in Mexico City is the ease of access. You will discover regular and cheap flights to Mexico City from most North American cities.

The biggest plus point is that Americans and Canadians can save over 50% if they undergo breast augmentation surgery from Mexico City rather than their home countries. Also, traveling and living expenses are also quite affordable, so you can end up saving thousands of dollars on one procedure.

Why Book with Breast Augmentation Surgery with Medical Departures?

Medical Departures' primary mission is to connect patients with highly-skilled surgeons and doctors abroad. We ensure this by conducting thorough background checks on the qualifications of the doctors, as well as clinic facilities and whether they follow internationally-recognized hygiene and safety procedures.

We list staff profiles, location maps, price comparison tables and past-patient reviews so you can make an informed decision as to where is best for your treatment rather than scrolling through endless search result pages online.

What Should I Know About a Breast Augmentation Procedure?

Before surgery, you should discuss with your doctor in detail about your expectations regarding size and feel of breasts post-surgery. A couple of weeks before surgery, you will be asked to stop smoking if you are a smoker and avoid taking aspirin or other medications that act as blood thinners.

In most cases, the surgery is carried out under general anesthetic, but in some cases, local anesthetic may be administered. An overnight stay is usually not required at the hospital and you can expect to go home the same day.

To insert the implant, your doctor will make an incision in either of these three ways: in the breast crease, under the arm or around the nipple. After the incision, a sort of pocket is made behind the nipple between the breast tissue and muscle. This is where the surgeon will place the implant.

Two types of implants are normally used for breast augmentations:

  • Saline implants, which are inserted empty and then filled with salt water; or
  • Silicone implants, which come pre-filled with silicone gel.

There is also an option for fat transfer breast augmentation. This involves removing fat via liposuction from another part of the body and injecting it into the breast. This option is for those women who are looking to increase their breast size by small amounts and elect not to have implants.

What Is the Recovery Time and Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

Your breasts will be swollen and sore for a few weeks after the surgery. You will be given a compression bandage to wear; if you experience pain, your doctor will prescribe pain medication. There will be tubes placed on the incision marks to drain any excess fluid or blood. These tubes will be removed after a couple of days along with your stitches if your doctor has used the non-dissolvable kind. The scars of the surgery will soften over time but they will not completely disappear.

Discuss with your doctor as to when it's okay for you to return to regular activities. If you do not have a physically demanding job then you can usually return to work within a week. You will be asked to avoid any strenuous activities which raise your pulse and blood pressure for at least two weeks. You also need to be careful to not let anything in contact with your breasts as they are highly sensitive.

Who Can Undergo this Surgery?

Breast augmentation can help to boost self-confidence for women who want to improve their image. For women who have had a mastectomy, this surgery can help them look like their former selves and build their confidence after their battle with cancer. This surgery is also a great option for women who have just had a baby, older women with sagging breasts or women who have recently lost a lot of weight.

However, if you plan on getting pregnant in the near future, you will likely be advised to wait until you are done having children as pregnancy causes the skin to stretch, negating any effects of the surgery (although breastfeeding in the future can still be possible).
