Your surgeon will administer either intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. Once you are sedated, the surgeon will make the required incisions. Once the excess skin is removed, your incision will be closed with either stiches, or bio-absorbable sutures. You can read more about arm lift surgery at the the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).
Depending on the location and amount of excess skin to be removed, the incision may be an inner arm incision from your armpit to your elbow, along the back of your arm, from below your armpit to your elbow, or perhaps just around your armpit area. Your surgeon will talk to you about the best technique for your specific needs.
Arm lift surgery takes around two to three hours to perform.
You should see improved results right away, but you may still have bruising and swelling.
You may be fitted with a compression garment to keep swelling down after surgery. You may also have a “drain” placed temporarily. This small, thin tube helps drain any excess body fluid or blood, and helps speed healing.
If you are just having a “day” procedure, and will be recovering at home, you will need someone to drive you back to your hotel. You may also want to plan for someone to stay with you for the first day or two, just to make sure you can take care of yourself.
Healing takes about a week and a half, and you may have to wear an elastic compression bandage for several months.
You may be able to return to work within three to five days, depending on your occupation. You may be restricted from arm movements that involve moving around at the shoulder for the first month.
