Nose Job

The Ultimate Guide to Nose Job

Last fact-checked: 5 December 2020

If the shape or size of your nose is making you unhappy, then correcting it with a nose job (rhinoplasty) could be the way forward.

Any kind of cosmetic surgery is not to be something done on a whim, and you will need to give it a great deal of thought—especially as your nose is one of your most prominent physical features and any alteration will obviously be very noticeable.

One factor that puts prospective patients off is the price, which can be out of reach for many of us. However, with Medical Departures, you can book your nose job for thousands less with one of our expert rhinoplasty surgeons around the world.

Am I Suitable for a Nose Job?

If you are reading this, you may have been considering a nose job for a long time, (especially if you are concerned about how your nose is shaped, rather than an accident that’s caused the problem). In both circumstances, there is no reason why you wouldn’t be suitable, providing you have realistic expectations, are in generally good health and over the age of 18.

What Is the Procedure for a Nose Job?

Nose surgery is as individual as we are; no two procedures are the same. For example, you may or may not require work to the bone or cartilage inside the nose, whereas others may need fillers or fat grafts to add volume. Your surgeon will be able to explain in greater detail what will be entailed in your specific procedure, as it will vary depending on what you require.

There are two general techniques used for making the incisions during nose surgery:

  • The open technique—where incisions are made on the outside of the nose with a small incision to the underside of the nose, between the nostrils.

  • The endonasal technique—where the incisions are made inside the nasal passages.

Both techniques have their pros and cons which you should discuss fully with your surgeon beforehand.

What Is the Recovery Time?

A nose job can usually be performed as an outpatient, so there is usually no need for an overnight stay in the hospital. Nevertheless, you will not be able to drive after the procedure, so do ensure you have someone pick you up afterward (this can be a private driver or service arranged through Medical Departures if you are traveling alone). It is also advisable to have someone stay with you overnight.

After surgery, you may be instructed to wear a nasal splint, which provides support for your nose while it heals, as well as protecting it from bumps, and while you sleep. Your nasal passes are also likely to be packed with dressings, which act as a splint and keep the airway free from crusting.

Swelling and bruising will be likely around the nose, eyes and face. Some cold presses may help to reduce this and to minimize discomfort. You will need to keep your head elevated as much as you can over the following days; this includes when sleeping (as it will help to reduce swelling).

You will be advised to limit your activities for a few weeks, including blowing your nose, and being gentle when performing routine activities, such as cleaning your teeth, wearing glasses or even strenuous facial expressions. Gradually, any discomfort will subside and you’ll find it easier to go about your everyday business. It will be around six weeks before you can engage in any strenuous or vigorous activity, such as sports.

Is Going Abroad for a Nose Job Worth it?

Yes, it can be when you schedule your visit with a trusted clinic that offers rhinoplasty surgery for at least 50% less than back home. In fact, many of our partner clinics offer savings of up to 70%, allowing you ample money to recuperate in a relaxing setting while you’re away from home.

For example, nose jobs in Thailand cost on average $2,500, compared to $8,800 in the US. In Mexico, you can expect to pay around $3,000.
