What happens during a Tummy Tuck?

You will be placed under general anesthesia, and sleep through the procedure.

The surgeon will make an incision, either very small, hip bone to hip bone, or along the abdominal area and around the hips, depending on the extent of the tummy tuck to be done. Excess skin will be removed, abdominal muscles and skin will be tightened. In many cases the navel (belly button) will be repositioned.

Depending on your health and your surgeon’s assessments, and the extent of your procedure, tummy tucks can be done as outpatient day surgery or admission as an inpatient for an overnight hospital stay.

You can read more about Tummy Tucks at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Abdominoplasty Techniques

There is a spectrum of tummy tuck techniques, from incredibly minimal, to highly involved and complex.

The most common are the:
Mini – smallest of the incisions and least amount of skin/tissue removal. Usually does not require the belly button to be moved.
Standard – incision is larger, usually between the hip bones
Extended – the incision is across the abdomen, and extends over the hips, to tighten more uniformly.

How long will the procedure take to do?

Tummy tucks take about two to four hours.

What does the recovery process look like?

There will be some discomfort in the surgical area, low back, and surrounding areas. You may have some swelling, numbness or bruising. You will be asked to wear a girdle / compression garment for about a month.

You can return to work in about two to four weeks, and get back to low impact exercise in about a month and a half. In about 3 months you’ll see more apparent results, and final results will stun you at 6 months.
