What Does a Chemical Peel Do?

A chemical peel can be carried out at different depths, and each peel uses a different solution. Depending on the result you want to achieve, they can be light, medium or deep–penetrating the upper layers of skin or the deeper layers as well.

Light and medium peels usually require a number of treatments to get results, whereas patients only require one deep treatment, which can provide dramatic results for up to 10 years.

Why Have a Chemical Peel in Thailand?

As we become ever more conscious of our image, and, in turn, become more willing to invest our time and money in taking care of how we look, age-defying treatments like dermal fillers and chemical peels are becoming commonplace. Thailand ranks among the world’s top medical tourist and spa destinations, offering expertise in surgery, and beauty treatments with branded products, with chemical peels widely available for a fraction of the cost back home.

If you are considering a chemical peel, make sure you do a little research into the procedure. Beauty treatments are ubiquitous in Thailand–from the street-side facial to state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics. You will want to choose your treatment center with care, focusing on the clinic's reputation and specialists' expertise.

Chemical peels are offered in several strengths, ranging from light to deep chemical peels, and while a light chemical peel is often offered at beauty salons, a deep chemical peel is a surgical procedure and should only be performed in a surgical setting by an appropriately qualified doctor—usually a plastic surgeon who may have international credentials with professional organizations.

Booking with Medical Departures

Working closely with fully-qualified medical staff and clinics in Thailand, Medical Departures only lists those who are reputable and have been fully verified. We have a number of processes to check and verify information provided to us so our patients can be reassured that appropriate measures have been taken to confirm the trustworthiness of the clinics and doctors in our listings. We pay personal visits to clinics, corroborate medical qualifications and professional memberships and look for any criminal/litigation proceedings. We also think it is important to get opinions from people who have used the services – patients themselves.

Of course, reviews are all very well and good, but not if they don’t present the whole picture. This is why we print all reviews, unedited, positive or negative. We offer our patients transparency and as much information as we can supply on our website to allow you to make your own informed decisions about your choices.

How Does a Chemical Peel Work and What Does the Procedure Involve?

The chemical peel removes the top layer(s) of damaged, tired and dull skin, depending on what depth you have, to reveal newer, younger skin underneath.

Light and medium chemical peels need not be carried out in a hospital, but a deep chemical peel does. Anesthesia is administered, which is why it requires a surgical setting, so do make sure you choose with care and look carefully at your doctor's qualifications and professional memberships.

Before the procedure commences, your skin will be prepped and thoroughly cleansed. After the general anesthetic has been given the chemical solution will be applied to your skin in small sections, one at a time. The solution will be removed before your surgeon moves on to the next section. Once the treatment has been completed, your skin will be dressed with bandages.

You won’t need a general anesthetic for a medium or light peel, and this will be applied all at once. The solution is left on the face for a short time, during which you may experience some stinging or slight burning. After the appropriate amount of time has passed, the chemical solution will be removed, and you will be given a cold press and lotion or cream to soothe your skin.

What Is the Recovery Time from a Chemical Peel?

You will be advised to spend time at home (particularly away from the sun), following your doctor's directives. Your face will swell and skin crusting, peeling and redness will be apparent for a few weeks after treatment. Over the next few months, your skin will rejuvenate, taking up to three months before the dramatic effects are complete. A key advantage of having a deep chemical peel is that you only need to have one treatment to yield results that last up to 10 years.

The medium and light peels do not require anywhere near the same downtime, with redness dissipating after a few days. You may experience mild skin crusting and skin shedding for a few weeks while the new skin is regenerating. The results are nowhere nearly as dramatic as a deep chemical peel, and it may take around three treatments to achieve the improvements you are seeking.

What is the Cost of a Chemical Peel in Thailand Compared to Australia and New Zealand?

The average cost for a deep chemical peel in Thailand is around AUD $1,500 (US $1,000, CAD $1,300, GBP £700, Euros 900). This is compared to an average of AUD $3,000 (US $2,000, CAD $2,700, GBP £1,300, Euros 1,900) in Australia.

Light and medium peels cost considerably less as they do not have to be performed under theatre conditions.
