Although no surgical treatment is entirely without risk as we all react and heal at different rates, you can tilt the success of your treatment in your favor by ensuring you choose a trustworthy provider.
To help this process, we have already done checks on our doctors and clinics – including any legal/criminal proceedings, professional memberships and qualifications. We list this information on our website with our patients’ reviews and high definition clinic photos. Onsite visits is another one of our checks, and quite simply, if we don’t like what we see, we don’t list. Booking with us already gives you an assurance that your clinic and doctor meets the requirements that we would expect, so you can choose with confidence.
Laser skin resurfacing promotes new skin growth which is smoother, tighter and blemish-free, by removing the damaged, outer layers of skin.
The treatment can be performed to a specific area on the face, such as around the eyes, or to the whole face. It is also often performed with other cosmetic surgery treatments, such as a facelift.
Unless you are having an extensive treatment, most laser skin resurfacing procedures are done as an out-patient, not usually requiring an overnight hospital stay. General anesthetics are only given for the extensive procedures, or if you are having other cosmetic surgery at the same time, but otherwise you will be given local anesthetic and sedation.
The laser beam is moved backwards and forwards across the skin, until the surgeon is happy that the lines, scars or wrinkles are less visible. Cream or ointment is applied when the treatment has finished, and maybe a bandage to protect the skin for 5 -10 days.
You will experience redness, swelling and discomfort immediately after the treatment, which you can help to ease with ice pack and pain meds. If you have a bandage on, it will be replaced after a few days, and this will be repeated until the skin is more healed. You are likely to have skin crusting/scabbing, with possibly some weeping, and you may be itchy as the skin begins to heal – it is important not to rub the crusts/scabs off, which may lead to scarring of your new skin.
After a couple of weeks you will be able to wear make up, which will conceal any pinkness, which may remain for up to 6 months. Some people experience hyper-sensitivity to their make-up products, s you may have to change brands until your skin settles down. It is important you wear a high factor sunscreen to protect your new skin from sun damage.
