What Is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation may also be referred to as breast implants, augmentation mammoplasty or informally, a "boob job." The procedure is commonly used to enhance both the shape and size of a woman's breasts. It may be used for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Enhancing the contour of your body shape
  • Improving the shape of breasts that have lost firmness
  • Restoring breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss
  • As part of reconstructive surgery after breast cancer treatment
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, ideal candidates for breast augmentation include individuals who are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, and have breasts that are fully developed.

Why Consider Breast Augmentation in Mexicali?

Breast augmentation can lend increased self-confidence in your appearance. If you are considering this procedure, it is important to make sure you carefully research your options.

For many years, Mexico has been a preferred destination for a variety of medical treatments, including breast augmentation for patients traveling from the United States and Canada. Easily reached by either driving or flying, the border city of Mexicali offers both convenience as well as affordable pricing for medical procedures.

While many people are often somewhat skeptical regarding seeking medical treatment in another country, Mexico is home to a vast array of world-class medical facilities. Numerous locales in Mexico, including Mexicali, have now become preferred destinations, giving medical travelers the opportunity to enjoy a vacation (or recuperation from surgery) while receiving expert medical care from physicians and doctors who have national and international qualifications and professional memberships, for example with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Why Book with Medical Departures?

What Does a Breast Augmentation Entail and How Long Does it Take?

When the goal is to increase the size of a woman's bustline, breast augmentation involves the insertion of an implant behind each breast. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will begin by making an incision in the crease under the breast, under the arm or around the nipple. Next, a pocket will be created in which the implant will be positioned.

After the implant is in place, incisions are closed using skin adhesive, sutures, and/or surgical tape. Gauze bandages may be placed over the breasts to assist with healing. This procedure typically takes between one and two hours.

Prior to your procedure, you will want to discuss with your surgeon about the types of breast implants available as well as where you prefer the incisions to be made. Discover more about your options for a breast augmentation here

What Is the Recovery Like?

Regarding your recovery, it is worth noting:

  • Patients should expect to feel sore and tired for several days following the procedure, although most people can usually be up and around within 24 to 48 hours. Discomfort can usually be alieved using prescribed pain medication.
  • Gauze dressings can be removed within several days, after which time patients may be provided with a surgical bra. Individuals undergoing breast augmentation may experience a burning or tingling sensation in the nipples for up to two weeks following the procedure. As bruising fades, this sensation will usually subside.
  • Stitches typically can be removed within a week to 10 days following breast augmentation.
  • Swelling may last for up to five weeks.
  • Patients should follow the advice of their physician regarding when to return to normal activities. Depending on the nature of your work, you may be able to return to work within a few days following your breast augmentation. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two weeks after your procedure. As the breasts are usually sore for several weeks after surgery, direct contact should be avoided during this time of healing.
  • Scars from the procedure will usually remain pink and firm for a minimum of six weeks following the procedure. Several months after breast augmentation, the scars should begin to fade in appearance.

How Much Can I Save on a Breast Augmentation in Mexicali Compared to the U.S. and Canada?
