The procedure for double eyelid surgery is reasonably short–30 minutes to an hour–and you should only require mild sedation or local anesthetic. An overnight stay in the hospital is not normally required.

Cosmetic surgeons usually deploy two basic techniques for this surgery, as outlined below:

1. The incision technique, where a cut is made across the upper eyelid. Loose skin, fat and tissue are removed and then the wound is stitched, forming a natural crease;
2. The non-incision technique, where a fold is made in the eyelid and stitched to form the double eyelid.

The problem with this latter technique is that it isn’t permanent, and after a few years it may well need to be performed again. Immediately after surgery, you can expect your eyes to feel bruised and sore, although you will be given pain medication to ease the discomfort. The swelling and bruising should reach a peak after a couple of days, and then will slowly start to subside. If you don’t have dissolvable stitches, these will be removed in five and seven days. After that, you will be able to apply make-up to disguise the bruising and swelling, which will take up to three weeks to disappear... thank goodness for sunglasses!

You will be advised not to exert yourself too much, avoiding strenuous activities for six weeks. Your eyes will gradually settle down over the next few months and will be completely healed between six months and a year.
