Our skin loses its youthful elasticity as we age. This is partly due to the fact that our bodies produce less collagen and hyaluronic acid to keep it looking plump and moisturized, as well as environmental factors such as sun damage, facial expressions and hereditary factors.

The skin on the forehead and the brow is one of the first areas to give away those telltale signs of aging. Thus, surgically tightening this area can take years off your face. It should be noted that forehead lift is sometimes referred to as a brow or eyebrow lift.

If you have lines and wrinkles across the forehead, particularly frown-lines in between the brows, as well as a flatter and less arched brow, then you may want to consider this surgery. You also need to be in good health and have realistic expectations in terms of the results.

The procedure takes between one and two hours, although this does depend on which technique is being used by your surgeon. This will usually be discussed with you beforehand, although during surgery your surgeon may opt for a different technique or a combination of techniques if they feel it would be more beneficial. For example:

• The surgery can be performed endoscopically (closed lift). This minimally invasive technique involves several small incisions being made across the scalp so that an endoscope (a long thin tube with a camera and light attached) can be inserted. This allows the surgeon to work underneath the skin without having to make a long incision.
  
  
• An open brow lift involves a long incision made in either one of the creases in the forehead, or along the hairline. Loose skin and excess fat are removed, and the remainder pulled tight and stitched.

Sterile dressings and an elastic bandage will be wrapped around the area before you wake up from your anesthesia. 

• You should expect bruising, swelling and tenderness during the days following surgery, but you should be given pain medication to ease the discomfort.
• Bruising and swelling should start to dissipate after around five days and your stitches are usually removed after a week.
• You will probably find it more comfortable to sleep in an elevated position, and this will also help to ease the swelling.
• You will be allowed to shower and bathe the day after the surgery, and you can wash your hair very carefully, taking care to keep the incision dry (also remember to use the coolest setting possible if using a hairdryer.)
• Light, everyday activities should be easier after a day or two, and many people return to work after a week.
• You should take it easy for several weeks, allowing up to three weeks before you get back to your normal routine, and over a month before you start physical exercise again.
