Thailand is a magnet for medical tourists and is well-known for its top-class facilities, know-how and expertise. Cosmetic surgery and associated non-invasive cosmetic treatments are some of the most popular procedures medical tourists seek in Thailand.

It may still be considered a "developing" nation, but its medical services are often far ahead of its Western counterparts. Hyaluronic Acid (HA), the active ingredient in Juvederm, is found in the human body in the joints, eyes and skin. It lubricates and moisturizes, retaining over 1,000 times its weight in water.

Ever wondered why babies have soft, dewy, plumped skin? It’s because they are naturally blessed with high quantities of hyaluronic acid after birth. Unfortunately, our bodies produce less of it as we age, and as it diminishes, our skin loses its moisture and that’s when we begin to see fine lines and wrinkles developing. Juvederm essentially adds HA back into the skin, which provides moisture and volume to even out those wrinkles.

Local anaesthetic is usually given prior to the Juvederm being administered. The injection points for each area to be treated are selected, and the Juvederm gel is injected directly into the skin with a fine needle.

Initially, after the treatment, you will probably experience localized swelling and redness (which you can cover up with make-up), but you will be able to return to your everyday activities immediately. You should be able to notice the results straight away, and the effects will last for up to a year.

The prices are typically based on a syringe, which is usually enough to treat one area, although some may require two. The average cost of Juvederm in Thailand is $500 (US $400, CAD $500, £250 GBP, €350).

In Australia, for example, the prices are around $800 (US $600, CAD $750, £400 GBP, €550).
