What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure carried out on women who want to reduce the amount of excess tissue around the labia—the outer lips that surround the vagina. This is usually performed for either cosmetic or medical reasons.

The purpose of the procedure is to reshape or shorten the vaginal lips and is usually performed either by a specialist plastic surgeon or gynecologist. The extra tissue is cut away with the help of a laser or a scalpel. The loose edges are then finely stitched together. The entire procedure can last anywhere from one to two hours.

Although the procedure is usually not painful, at the same time, it is possible that you may experience a degree of swelling for the first four to six weeks following the procedure, and there may also be black and blue discoloration, which will subside over the days and weeks.

For a labiaplasty, it is suggested that you rest for four to five days following the procedure. During the first 24 hours, you will be advised to stay out of the water as well, although you can resume showering in a day.

After a few days, basic activities may be resumed and around two weeks after the surgery, and your doctor may declare you fit to carry out modest exercises and resume all usual, daily activities. Intensive exercise can only be carried out approximately three weeks to one month after the procedure, and an additional two weeks should be allowed before one should resume sexual activities or activities like bike riding or other active sports.
