IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a complex process but one of the most common forms of assisted reproductive technology (ART) for couples who are experiencing fertility problems.

For many Westerners, it can be an incredibly expensive process, but the costs are considerably lower in Thailand—one of the medical tourism capitals of the world

The facilities and techniques in this Southeast Asian country are on a par with Western standards, which means you won’t be diminishing your chances of conceiving just because you’re undergoing treatment abroad. Plus, getting away from it all can be relaxing, especially if you have the chance to get out of the city and to the beach; a chill holiday can also have a positive effect when it comes to IVF.

Who Is Suitable for IVF?

The success of the treatment depends on a number of factors which include lifestyle, age and the cause of infertility. Problems which may have led to the need for IVF include:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Fallopian tubes that have become damaged or blocked
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovulation problems
  • Antibodies that have harmed eggs or sperm
  • Male infertility, such as sperm motility or low sperm count

Why Should I Consider IVF in Bangkok?

While cost is one of the major considerations for couples looking at IVF in Bangkok (savings of up to 60% are not unusual), the Thai capital also boasts a well-established infrastructure, state-of-the-art clinics, JCI-accredited hospitals and laboratories that are equipped with the latest technologies to deliver all manner of fertility treatments.

The expertise available at the best clinics and hospitals in Bangkok, as many people have discovered, is just as high-quality as at home. Facilities often look (and are) better, as well, which obviously gives patients that added level of confidence. When it comes to fertility treatments, this is especially desirable, as it is believed that conception is more likely to happen when a patient feels relaxed.

Most patients find their IVF experience in Bangkok to be extremely positive, with the attentiveness of the staff, high standards of customer care and warm Thai hospitality all contributing factors. For example, rather than have to give yourself injections—a stressful part of the IVF process when done at home—nurses at your chosen clinic in Bangkok will be on hand to do this for you every day. Similarly, clinics are open during the weekends, so if the optimum day for egg transfer is on a Sunday, that will be the day it will happen (rather than moving it to the Friday or Monday simply to convenience the staff).

We always advise patients to do a little homework and not just choose a clinic simply because it’s the cheapest. Booking with Medical Departures gives you pre-checked doctors and clinics whose qualifications and professional memberships have already been verified by us, and the premises visited personally. With real patient reviews published on our website, our patients get an accurate overview of clinics before they book.

How Long Is the IVF Procedure and What Is Involved?

There are a number of steps involved in the IVF procedure, with patients typically needing to spend at least 7-10 days in Bangkok.

The steps include:

  1. Egg Production: Egg production is stimulated with medication. Blood tests and ultrasound are used to examine the ovaries in order to see if production has occurred.

  1. Egg Collection: If eggs have been produced, a minor surgical procedure using a hollow needle to collect the eggs is performed.

  1. Sperm collection: A sperm sample is collected from the male

  1. Fertilization: The sperm and eggs are combined in laboratory conditions to encourage fertilization. This is monitored closely for signs of cell division, which would confirm that fertilization has occurred.

  1. Transfer of embryos: Three to five days after fertilization, the viable eggs are transferred to the uterus via a painless procedure. If successful, implantation is performed between six and 10 days after egg retrieval.

There are modified versions of IVF, including ZIFT (Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer) and GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer).

What Is the Cost of IVF in Bangkok Compared to Australia or New Zealand?

In Bangkok, IVF costs around AUD $3,500 per cycle, making substantial savings compared to around $7,800 in Australia. [Please note: these are average price comparisons calculated at the time of writing.]

We had a great experience, our doctor Oray Karaçaylı is extremely professional. Thanks to his trust and warm approach, my daughter did not experience any problems before and after the surgery. The nurses on duty were also very attentive and caring. There were only no consumables in our room, we got soap and paper after a 3-hour wait.

I went to the hospital for the second time yesterday and I would like to thank the gentleman in a suit at the entrance, the doctors and the security guards for their interest and concern. Everyone was very open to communication and explanatory.

Dear Professor Cenk Ersavaş, I cannot thank you enough for the abscess drainage surgery I had on February 11th. As someone who had previously undergone an unsuccessful operation and an unnecessary intervention, I was worried when I came to you. However, I reached out to you by trusting the comments on the internet and I understood very clearly how right I was during and after the surgery. You are not only an excellent surgeon, but also a sincere and trustworthy person who approaches his patients like a brother, who is always accessible. I am 40 years old and I have never met such a doctor before. I feel very lucky to have met you. Brother Cenk, thank you so much for everything! I am so glad you exist, I am so glad I got to know you.

All the doctors are very good and egoless. They do not look down on people and speak with attitude. The dialogue between the doctors is also very good and they successfully produced a solution to a complicated situation together. The nurses and the desk clerks are very cheerful. We slept on the second floor. The floors and rooms are clean and the food is very good. If you have any health problems, first go to a Memorial Ataşehir.

I gave birth there too, 5 years later we went to Dr. Bülent Karadağ for my daughter's allergies... We were very, very pleased... He listened in detail and found a solution.
