When you arrive for your Botox treatment, you’ll first have a consultation with the doctor. You’ll talk about your expectations, and the doctor’s suggestions of how to proceed. Usually the injections happen during that appointment, after the consultation. The Botox will be prepared, and the areas to be treated will be cleansed. Anesthesia is generally not used. Even though several injections are performed, the needle is very small, and pain is minimal.
Application techniques are generally the same, but may vary in dosage, and how long the effects last. Three brands are:
Botox Cosmetic – most widely used
Botox is also used to treat non-cosmetic conditions like muscle spasms, facial asymmetry (like Bells Palsy), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraines, and strabismus (crossed/lazy eye).
A Botox session will take about 10 -15 minutes, once the consultation is complete.
You can return to normal life as soon as you walk out the clinic door. You’ll want to walk around and/or sit upright, but take it easy, avoiding strenuous activity for the rest of the day. You may have some redness or swelling around the injection sites, but that should resolve quickly.
You can expect your results to show within a week, and last for three to six months.
