Also known as simply a “nose job,” rhinoplasty predominantly helps to improve facial harmony by altering the size and/or shape of the nose. The procedure can also be used to correct breathing problems resulting from structural defects within the nose.

Every nose job is as unique as the individual receiving treatment. However, the typical process is summarized below, from the first point of contact with your surgeon in Istanbul through to you leaving the clinic or hospital, heading back to your hotel in the city to rest for a couple of days.

First, you will meet with your chosen surgeon in Istanbul who will provide an initial assessment, confirming your suitability. This is your chance to discuss what the procedure involves, your aesthetic goals, and any important considerations for the days, weeks and months following surgery.

A nose job may be performed under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation. Prior to your procedure, your surgeon will likely administer medications to help you feel more comfortable. 

This procedure may be performed using either an open or a closed technique. In the closed method, the incisions are hidden inside the nose, whereas the open technique essentially “opens up” the nose to a greater degree, using a small incision at the base of the nose. 

During the procedure, your surgeon will gently raise the skin covering the nasal cartilage and bones, making it possible to reshape the nasal structure.

Depending on the goal of the procedure, cartilage or bone may be removed. In some cases, the addition of cartilage grafts may also be required to achieve the desired outcome. When this is the case, cartilage will often be taken from the septum. 

If you suffer from a deviated septum, the surgeon may straighten this and reduce projections inside the nose to allow for improved breathing. 

Once the procedure is complete, the nasal tissue and skin will be redraped and your doctor will close the incisions. 

The procedure usually takes between one and two hours.

As with any plastic surgery, nose jobs do carry a certain degree of risk, and it is important to be aware of potential but rare rhinoplasty side effects, safety considerations and complications, which include:

• Changes in skin sensation or discolouration
• Difficulty in breathing
• Slow wound healing or scarring
• Infection
• Swelling
• Unsatisfactory appearance
• Undesirable scarring
• Anaesthesia risks

Immediately after surgery, take note of the following points:

• Packing and/or a splint will usually be placed inside your nose. 
• Bandages or a splint may also be placed on the outside of your nose to provide protection and support. 
• Rhinoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will be allowed to return to your accommodation in Istanbul a few hours after the procedure is complete. 
• You will likely feel most uncomfortable on the first day following your procedure. 
• Congestion is common due to initial swelling. 
• During the first few days following your procedure, you may find it necessary to take pain medication.

Over the next days and weeks while in Turkey and when you have arrived home:

• Patients should expect to experience some bruising during the first week, while numbness in the nasal area is also common. 
• It is important to be aware that initial swelling will usually subside within a few weeks of your procedure, but it may take up to a year to see full results. 
• During the first year following your procedure, you may also notice intermittent swelling, particularly in the morning.
• Swelling should completely diminish within 18 months following the procedure, at which time you can see the final shape of your nose.
