Book your hair transplant in Bangkok with Medical Departures and save up to 60% compared to what you’d pay at home. Thinning hair or baldness can be a thing of the past with a hair transplant, and this guide runs through everything you need to know about traveling to the Thai capital to undergo this life-changing procedure.

Who Is Suitable for a Hair Transplant?

Certain people will not benefit from a hair transplant, for example, if your hair loss has been caused by stress, medication or medical treatment. Also, if you are entirely bald, it is unlikely that a hair transplant will work for you.

However, if you have permanent hair loss that can’t be treated by non-surgical methods and you have sufficient hair growth or follicles that can be harvested for a transplant, then you could be a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.

Why Go to Bangkok for a Hair Transplant?

The very concept of medical travel has existed for centuries, but it was Bangkok, in the 1990s that firmly put medical tourism on the map.

Offering purpose-built hospitals and clinics equipped with modern technology and skilled, English-speaking doctors, prices in Bangkok have always been considerably lower than many people would have to pay at home, so it wasn’t long before medical tourism became popular.

The influx of foreign patients, and of course the money they spend, has enabled the industry to become sustainable. Money is re-invested to improve facilities, helping to keep them coming. This, in itself, is testament to how good the vast majority of patients’ experiences are of medical care in the country, particularly so Bangkok, which receives the most patients.

Why Book with Us?

The cost of treatment is obviously an important factor, but this should not be at the expense of quality. Sure – Bangkok has many fine healthcare facilities – but we always say it pays to do your own background checks.

When booking with Medical Departures, you can be assured that all doctors you see on our site have been pre-screened; we background-check doctor qualifications, professional memberships, include clinic photos, virtual tours and real patient reviews as part of the process on our website – all to establish dependable credentials that patients can trust. This information is freely available for anyone to access at any time, and patients can obtain free quotes and book appointments, either online or via our toll-free phone numbers.

Medical Departures has taken the guesswork out of finding reliable medical practitioners abroad, so you can find the best facility for your hair transplant in Bangkok – or anywhere else in the world. We encourage patients to speak directly with one of our Customer Care team for further information or to discuss any other aspect of your trip.

How Long Does a Hair Transplant Procedure Take?

A number of hair transplant methods are available, but typically a session of between 1,500 and 3,000 grafts involves a full day of surgery – usually as an out-patient. This means that you will need to arrive first thing in the morning and leave with the procedure completed by late afternoon.

The various methods used for hair transplantation are:

  • Strip Harvesting – where a strip of hair is removed, dissected into smaller groups and implanted where required.
  • Flap Surgery – where a bald section of the scalp is replaced with a section containing follicles.
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – where grafts are harvested from small areas around the scalp and implanted where required.
  • Scalp Reduction – also called advancement flap surgery it is often done as an alternative or in addition to a hair transplant and involves removing a bald section of scalp and pulling the hairline forward to cover.

What Is the Recovery Time for a Hair Transplant?

You will be given local anesthesia so you shouldn't feel any discomfort during the procedure. After the surgery, you may experience some numbness and soreness, but it is usually minimal. You may be given dressings, pain medication and possibly antibiotics but you will probably be able to return to work just days after the surgery.

Your grafts will drop out after they have been transplanted – which is entirely normal – and will grow back thicker and more natural-looking after around 3 months’ time.

How Much Can I Save on Hair Transplants in Bangkok Compare to Australia?

The cost will depend on the method used, but on average hair transplants cost $1,300 in Bangkok, to in excess of AUD $3,500 in Australia (as an example).
