About Cosmetic Surgery for the Breasts

Breast surgery–when used as a catch-all term–includes all procedures designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts to improve overall aesthetics, as well as other procedures to lift the breasts, reduce size or correct asymmetry.

The most sought-after procedure for international patients considering going abroad for treatment is breast augmentation (also known as augmentation mammoplasty), which is the world’s most popular type of cosmetic surgery (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as of a 2022 report).

The procedure is typically achieved by surgically inserting breast implants that are filled with highly safe saline or silicone gel to enhance breast appearance. Surgeons can customize the size, shape, and type of implant based on the patient's preferences and breast tissue characteristics.

Additionally, techniques such as fat grafting may be used for the procedure, which involves transferring fat from other areas of the body to the breasts.

Patients typically seek out breast augmentations for the following reasons:

- Enhancing breast size to boost self-confidence.

- Restoring lost breast volume results from factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

- Modifying breast shape, including achieving a more rounded or teardrop appearance.

- Correcting asymmetrical breasts.

- Serving as a component of breast reconstruction following surgeries like mastectomy.

How Much Can I Save on Cosmetic Surgery for the Breasts Abroad?

Breast augmentation, being used as an example here, is considered a cosmetic surgery and therefore not covered by insurance or national health plans. Thus, the cost of this procedure in Western countries can be prohibitively high.

However, opting for breast augmentation abroad can result in significant cost savings of at least 50%, and often more.

In the United States, the average cost of breast implant surgery can exceed $20,000, depending on your location, surgeon and type of implant used.

The below table shows some average price estimates in three of the world’s top medical destinations for breast implants:

Countries

Average Cost of Breast Augmentation

Thailand

USD 2500 - 6000

Mexico

USD 2900 - 6000

Turkey

Why Go Abroad for Breast Surgery?

Embarking on breast surgery abroad holds allure for various reasons. One primary factor is cost savings, as many countries offer the procedure at a significantly lower expense compared to Western nations. The lower cost is often attributed to the overall reduced cost of living in these sought-after destinations, allowing clinics to offer more competitive prices without compromising quality of care.

Moreover, the availability of highly skilled and experienced surgeons in these locations assures patients of receiving top-notch medical care. Our network of surgeons abroad have international qualifications and adhere to rigorous safety and quality standards.

Additionally, the chance to combine the surgery with a rejuvenating vacation–or relaxing recovery–can be an attractive aspect. Patients can recover in a serene and culturally rich environment, adding a positive and unique dimension to their overall experience. This combination of medical care and leisure creates an atmosphere where healing extends beyond the physical, integrating mental and emotional rejuvenation.

Why Is Plastic Surgery Cheaper Abroad?

Medical care, including plastic surgery, is often associated with high expenses, creating financial challenges for many seeking their dream look.

However, the rise of medical tourism has transformed the healthcare landscape, providing individuals with access to cost-effective, high-quality treatment in various global locations.

Factors contributing to reduced medical costs overseas include:

 - Lower Cost of Living

The notably lower cost of medical care in popular spots, such as Turkey, Thailand, and Mexico, generally has a lower cost of living compared to Western countries. This results in reduced business overhead costs for medical clinics, enabling them to offer more affordable prices to patients.

 - Government Financial Support

Certain nations actively endorse the medical tourism sector by extending tax breaks and incentives to clinics catering to international patients. This governmental backing plays a pivotal role in maintaining competitiveness and affordability in medical care costs.

 - Lower Cost of Higher Education

In premier tourism destinations, the expense of obtaining a medical education is significantly lower than in the West. Despite the cost difference, the duration of study at these universities remains comparable to that of Western institutions. Typically spanning five to six years, these programs adhere to rigorous academic standards recognized internationally. This ensures that graduates acquire the essential skills and knowledge required for effective medical practice.

Types of Breast Surgeries Abroad

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation primarily focuses on enhancing breast size and shape using implants, typically silicone or saline-filled shells, placed either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. This procedure is chosen by individuals desiring fuller or larger breasts, often to improve symmetry or restore volume lost due to factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, focuses on addressing sagging or drooping breasts by reshaping and repositioning the existing breast tissue. This procedure is ideal for those experiencing breast sagging due to factors like aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations. Unlike augmentation, a breast lift doesn't involve adding implants; instead, excess skin is typically removed to elevate the breasts to a more youthful position, often achieving a perkier and firmer appearance.

However, a mastopexy procedure can be combined with breast augmentation to address sagging or excess skin and loss of volume.

Breast Reduction

breast reduction procedure, or reduction mammoplasty, involves surgically removing excess breast tissue, skin, and fat to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. This surgery is often sought by individuals experiencing discomfort, pain, or restriction of physical activity due to overly large breasts.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

This surgery aims to reduce excess breast tissue in men. During a gynecomastia procedure, the surgeon removes glandular tissue and, if necessary, excess fat through liposuction. The procedure reshapes the chest, creating a flatter, and more masculine contour.

Recovery involves wearing a compression garment and avoiding strenuous activities. Gynecomastia surgery helps address the enlargement of male breasts, restoring confidence and a more proportionate chest appearance.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses a liposuction-like technique to first harvest excess fat from one part of the body, typically the abdomen or thighs. The extracted fat is purified and then injected into the breasts to enhance size and shape.

This procedure offers a natural alternative to traditional breast implants with the added benefit of body contouring through fat removal. It's suitable for those seeking a modest increase in breast volume with a more subtle and organic result.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a procedure aimed at restoring the shape and appearance of the breast after mastectomy or significant breast tissue loss. Typically performed in multiple stages, it involves using implants or the patient's own tissue, often from the abdomen or back, to recreate a natural-looking breast mound.

This procedure helps women regain a sense of wholeness and symmetry, enhancing both physical and emotional well-being after breast cancer surgery.

Breast Revision

Breast revision is a procedure that addresses complications or dissatisfaction with previous breast augmentation or reconstruction. It may involve replacing old implants with newer material, size adjustment, or correction of asymmetry.

Additionally, issues like implant rupture, capsular contracture, or changes in aesthetic preferences can prompt breast revision.

Breast Surgery Risks and Post-Op Recovery

Cosmetic breast surgery, whether it involves procedures like breast implants, reduction, lift, or reconstruction, carries inherent risks and potential complications. It's crucial for individuals considering these surgeries to be aware of the possible risks, as outlined below:

 - Infections: This can occur at the incision site or around implants and may require antibiotic treatment.

 - Hematoma: Accumulation of blood outside blood vessels, forming a hematoma, can occur after surgery. If significant, it may require drainage.

 - Seroma: Similar to a hematoma, a seroma is the accumulation of fluid, often clear or pale yellow, at the surgical site. It may need drainage if it causes discomfort or complications.

 - Scarring: All surgical procedures involve incisions, leading to the formation of scars. While efforts are made to minimize scarring, individual healing varies.

 - Changes in sensation: Breast surgery can sometimes lead to changes in nipple or breast sensation. Temporary or permanent changes in sensitivity may occur.

 - Anesthesia risks: Anesthesia carries its own set of risks, including allergic reactions, respiratory issues, or adverse reactions to medications.

 - Changes in breast appearance: Despite careful planning, there can be variations in the final appearance, shape, or symmetry of the breasts.

 - Unsatisfactory results: Patient satisfaction is subjective, and there is a possibility that the results may not meet the individual's expectations.

 - Long-term effects: Some procedures, such as breast augmentation, may carry long-term considerations, such as the need for implant replacement or removal.

Risks specific to breast implant surgery can include:

 - Implant rupture: a tear in the outer shell of the implant

 - Changes in nipple and breast sensation: Implants may cause breast pain and changes in breast and nipple sensation.

 - Capsular contracture: formation of a scar tissue capsule around the implant which can tighten and contract, causing various degrees of firmness, distortion of breast shape, and discomfort.

 - Anaplastic large cell lymphoma: BIA-ALCL is a type of lymphoma, a rare form of cancer that can develop around breast implants, occurring most frequently in patients who have breast implants with textured surfaces.

 - Implant displacement: Implants are not fixed in place; they can shift downward, upward, closer, or farther apart. In some cases, displacement may require corrective surgery.

 - Trouble breastfeeding: Typically women who undergo breast augmentation can successfully breastfeed, but some may have trouble, especially if the incision was made around the areola. The milk ducts may have been altered causing a reduction or discontinuation in milk production

It is important for patients to discuss potential risks and complications thoroughly with their surgeon, follow pre-and post-operative care instructions, and attend regular follow-up appointments to monitor for any issues.

Breast Surgery Recovery

The recovery process for breast surgery can vary based on the specific type of surgery performed (e.g., breast augmentation, reduction, lift, or reconstruction). The following is a summary of general guidelines that individuals undergoing breast surgery can typically expect during the recovery period:

Immediate Postoperative Period:

 - Monitoring: Patients are monitored in a recovery area immediately following surgery.

 - Pain Management: Pain medications may be prescribed to manage discomfort.

First Few Days:

 - Rest and Limited Activity: Rest is crucial during the initial days. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities.

 - Compression Garments: Depending on the surgery, patients may be instructed to wear compression garments or surgical bras to support the breasts and minimize swelling.

 - Follow-up Appointments: Patients typically have follow-up appointments to monitor progress and address any concerns.

First 1-2 Weeks

 - After undergoing certain breast surgeries or procedures, it is common for patients to experience swelling and bruising in the affected area. In the first week following the surgery or procedure, it is important for patients to limit their movement and avoid any heavy lifting or movements that may strain the chest muscles. This is particularly important for surgeries that involve the chest or upper body.

 - By limiting movement, patients can help prevent further irritation or damage to the affected area and promote healing. Patients may also be advised to wear compression garments or bandages to help manage swelling and bruising.

 - Swelling and bruising are common initially after surgery or a procedure, but should gradually decrease over time. To manage these symptoms, patients can use ice packs or cold compresses on the affected area to help reduce swelling. It is also important for patients to get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous physical activity during this time.

 - In addition, patients may be advised to take certain medications, such as pain relievers or anti-inflammatories, to help manage pain and reduce swelling. It is important for patients to follow their doctor's instructions closely and attend any follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and recovery.

1 - 3 Months:

 - After the first month of recovery, patients who have undergone breast surgery may gradually resume their normal daily activities, including light exercises and household chores. However, they should still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities, as these may put unnecessary stress on their bodies and slow down the healing process.

 - It is important to note that patients should avoid direct sun exposure on incisions during this time. Sun exposure can cause discoloration of the scar tissue, leading to unsightly marks that may take longer to fade. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended that patients wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 when going outside. Recovering patients should refrain from embarking on beach vacations or other activities that involve strenuous movement and exposure to sunlight.

 - In addition to these precautions, patients should also continue to follow any post-operative care instructions provided by their healthcare provider. This may include taking prescribed medications, attending follow-up appointments, and monitoring the incision site for signs of infection or other complications.

6-8 Weeks:

 - Generally, it is recommended that patients wait between 6-8 weeks before gradually resuming exercise, depending on the type and extent of the surgery that was performed.

 - In some cases, patients may be able to start with light exercises such as walking or stretching, while others may need to wait longer before engaging in more strenuous activities. It is important to follow the instructions of your doctor and physical therapist to ensure that you do not cause any further damage or delay your recovery.

 - Additionally, it is essential to regularly monitor the incision site for any signs of infection or abnormal healing. This can include redness, swelling, discharge, or an increase in pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.

Long-Term Recovery

Scar care: Proper scar care, including avoiding sun exposure and using recommended creams or ointments, may be advised for optimal healing.
