What Does an Eyebrow Lift Achieve?

It's quite common for frown lines and sagging brows to make an appearance as you begin to age. Even so, wrinkles can cause you to look older or may even cause you to have an unhappy or angry appearance.

Such lines and wrinkles are often the results of skin relaxing as it loses elasticity. Having an eyebrow lift can eliminate the appearance of saggy, droopy eyebrows that cause you to look older.

How Long Does an Eyebrow Lift Take and What Is the Recovery Like?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be done in the hospital or as an out-patient procedure. You will first meet with your surgeon to discuss your goals.

Once the surgery is underway, your doctor can use one of several techniques, based on your goals. The surgeon will make several small incisions along the hairline. An endoscope (a tube equipped with a camera) may be used to guide the surgeon. If you prefer the height of your hairline to remain unchanged, an incision may be made in the anterior hairline.

Following your procedure, you should expect your forehead to be taped for support and to prevent swelling and bruising. Your doctor may also have inserted thin tubes to drain fluid. The tube will be removed within a few days after your procedure. If stitches were used to close the incision, they will be removed within a week following your surgery. In some instances, it may be necessary for the doctor to use special staples or screws to secure your new brow. If used, the screws will be removed within two weeks.

Other things to take into consideration regarding your recovery:

  • Bruising and swelling are common following an eyebrow lift, and you may notice this around your cheeks and eyes. It's also common to experience some itching.
  • Any discoloration or swelling should disappear within about one week.
  • You will need to keep your head elevated for the first few days after your procedure to minimize swelling.
  • Your doctor may advise you to use cold compresses to ease pain and swelling. Painkillers may be prescribed to help with any discomfort you feel.
  • Among the most common side effects of an eyebrow lift is numbness, which can last for several months following the procedure.
  • Patients are typically able to resume normal activities and work within two weeks following the surgery.
