What does the gastric bypass involve and how long does it take?

Surgery is usually done endoscopically these days (what is referred to as keyhole surgery) which means your surgeon can access your insides without having to make large incisions across your abdomen, which is much better for your recovery. The process usually takes around an hour, but in rare, difficult cases it make take several hours.

The surgery involves dividing the stomach and making a small pouch at the top which is then connected to the small intestine at the bottom. When food enters the stomach it enters the pouch, and the digested food bypasses the larger part of the stomach and most of the small intestine. This means that you will feel fuller quickly, so won’t eat as much and there is less chance of the food to be absorbed as it only spends a little time in the shortened small intestine. Both of these factors will lead to substantial weight loss.

What is the recovery time?

You will be in hospital from between 2 and 5 days and will not be allowed to eat anything for the first few days to give your digestive system a little time to heal. After that, liquids will be introduced, followed by pureed food before graduating to solids.

A huge commitment to lifestyle changes is required, not only with regard to the foods you eat but also by embarking on regular exercise to help build muscle and to ensure you have regular check-ups and blood tests to monitor your health.
