Why Would I Consider a Lip Enhancement?

You may have always wished for fuller lips, or, as you’ve got older you’ve found your lips have lost their natural plumpness. This, unfortunately, is another unwanted sign of getting older – the collagen and hyaluronic acid which gives our skin its fullness and youthful bloom decreases as we age, and our lips suffer the same problem as our skin – dehydration leading to wrinkles and loss of volume.

The majority of lip enhancement procedures are certainly something you can have quickly and easily in Mexico as many of them are non-surgical, although surgery is always an option if you have more time.

Why Consider Mexico for My Lip Enhancement?

If you’d like to dip a toe in the water, so to speak, of trying cosmetic procedures abroad, but don’t want to take the full surgery plunge, then lip enhancements are a good place to start. You may be on vacation and want to give yourself a little lift before you return home or you may be fortunate enough to live near the US-Mexico border, where traveling to Mexico can save you some money.

Mexico is blessed with a wide variety of clinics, and destinations to suit all tastes, so you’re sure to be able to find somewhere offering the services you want in a convenient location. Top border cities for inexpensive medical treatment include the likes of Tijuana and Mexicali while popular fly-to destinations are Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City.

How Do I Find a Reputable Clinic?

With so many cosmetic procedures being done in a lunch-hour, so-to-speak, it’s easy to forget that they are medical treatments and to assume there are no risks. There are – and you should take reasonable precautions. It's true there are internationally-renowned facilities and medical expertise, but you do need to do some homework to make sure you find them.

Booking with Medical Departures helps you minimize any risk because we pre-check all of our partner clinics in Mexico and around the world, ensuring they meet certain standards, which generally means their services are reliable. It’s important to remember that no medical procedure can ever be guaranteed completely – our bodies are all individual and may react differently – but at least choosing a good clinic gives you a head start.

We use real patient testimonials, visit clinics personally and confirm professional memberships and staff qualifications, as well as checking for any legal or criminal proceedings. If we’re not happy, we don’t list – and you can read through all the clinic and practitioner information for free, on our website.

What Kinds of Lip Enhancement Procedures Are Available?

Lip enhancement procedures can generally be divided into surgical and non-surgical treatments, and it is possible to have a combination to achieve the desired result.

They can also be permanent or temporary, and this is something you should consider carefully before you decide to go ahead, especially with permanent treatments, which are very difficult to reverse if you are not happy with the results.

Injection treatments:

Injections used for facial fillers can sometimes be used for lip enhancements.

Restylane® and Juvederm® are two of the most popular brands; they can be injected in a matter of moments, provide instant results and last for around three months, after which you can have the procedure repeated.

Autologous Fat Transfer:

This is where fat removed from one part of your body is re-injected into the lips (after it has been processed and cleansed). This is usually performed if you are having liposuction on another part of your body, and, in this case, would require two procedures – the initial liposuction and the injection into your lips.

Surgery is a permanent solution and includes:

  • Dermal grafts, whereby incisions are made inside the mouth to place fat-grafts taken from deeper skin layers.
  • Lip implants, whereby incisions are made in the corners of the mouth to insert synthetic or natural implants.
  • Lip lifts - this pulls the top lift upwards by making an incision under the nose, removing excess skin and pulling the remaining skin upwards and stitching in place. A similar procedure can correct a downward-turning mouth, but by making small incisions at corners of the mouth.

What Is the Recovery Time for Lip Enhancement Procedures?

This really depends on what procedure you have done. Surgery obviously has a longer downtime than the injection procedures, but still only a couple of days before you feel better, and maybe another few for any swelling and bruising to subside.

Injections with fillers have virtually no downtime – apart from a little stinging, redness and swelling for a few hours – but most people find these aren’t severe enough to stop them carrying on with their normal activities.

If in doubt, consult with your doctor who will be able to provide more detailed advice.

How Much Can I Save on Lip Enhancement Procedures in Mexico Compared to the United States or Canada?

Lip enhancement in Mexico is generally much less expensive than in the United States, but it depends on what procedure you decide to have done.

As an example, a lip lift in Mexico can be as little as $1,000, compared to between $3,000 – 4,0000 in the United States.
